Afghan Wedding Gifts and Traditions: What to Send Home
The Yar team · · 2 min read

An Afghan wedding is rarely a single day. It is a season of visits, sweets, music, cooking and family gatherings that can stretch over weeks or months. When you live abroad, missing a cousin's or sibling's wedding is hard, but there are still meaningful ways to be part of the celebration.
The stages of an Afghan wedding
Customs vary widely between regions and families, so treat this as a general picture rather than a rule. Many families follow a path that looks something like this:
- Khastgari: the groom's family visits to ask for the bride's hand.
- Shirini-khori: the families share sweets to mark the agreement, often an engagement gathering.
- Nikah: the religious marriage ceremony.
- Henna night: an evening of music and henna for the bride and close family.
- Arusi: the main wedding celebration, often with a large meal and many guests.
Gifts that suit each moment
Sweets play a big part in Afghan weddings, especially at shirini-khori, when trays of sugared almonds, cookies and local sweets are shared with guests. A generous box from our dry fruit and sweets collection is a natural contribution from a relative abroad. For the henna night or the wedding day, flowers and a cake bring colour and warmth, and a gift set for the new couple gives them something to keep.
You can also support the host family in practical ways. Weddings mean many guests and a lot of cooking in the days before and after, and a family food package can quietly ease the load.
Sending your gift well
Wedding homes are busy and crowded, so a little planning helps. Order a few days ahead, especially for provinces outside Kabul, where delivery takes a few days depending on distance. Add a name and a reliable phone number for the recipient, because the courier calls before arriving. Every order includes a free handwritten card in Dari, Pashto or English, a lovely place for your congratulations and prayers for the couple. You receive a photo of the handover at the door, so you can share in the moment.
After the wedding
The first anniversary is a beautiful chance to remind the couple that you are thinking of them. Save the date in your occasion reminders and you will receive an email a week before, with plenty of time to choose flowers or a cake.
