How Big a Degh? Planning Food for a Family Gathering From Abroad
The Yar team · · 1 min read

When you are the one paying from abroad, it is easy to order too little and embarrass the hosts, or far too much and waste food. A few simple questions to the family before you order make all the difference.
Ask the family first
- How many adults and how many children are expected?
- Is this the main meal, or will there be other dishes too?
- Are guests coming for lunch or for dinner, and roughly when?
- Will food also go to neighbours or the mosque afterwards?
Kitchens size a degh by the number of people it should feed, not by weight, so the number of guests is the most useful thing you can tell us. If the family is unsure, give a range, and the team will suggest a size and explain the price difference.
Plan for more guests, not fewer
Afghan gatherings grow. A cousin brings a friend, the neighbours come by, someone stays for dinner. If you are torn between two sizes, the bigger one is usually the safer choice; leftover food is shared, while running short is remembered.
Timing
A degh should arrive shortly before the meal, not hours early. Give the team the time the guests will eat, and order at least a day ahead. Around Eid, Thursdays and Fridays, order earlier still.
Extras that complete the table
A degh is often the centre of the meal, but you can round it off with dry fruit and sweets for tea afterwards, or a cake if it is a celebration. These can be added to the same delivery when you message us.
